A board of trustees directs the Academy and oversees all matters relating to its proper functioning, both in its internal operations and in its relations with state agencies and other Academies. The Academy director chairs this board, which consists of the deputy director, secretary, censor, librarian, treasurer, deputy secretary and two assistant members. All these functions are elective and, with the exception of the members, elected every two years, may be exercised for four years and are renewable once.
To assist the tasks that the Academy performs in plenary or committee sessions, an Institute of Lexicography, composed of philologists and lexicographers, carries out preparatory work for the development of academic dictionaries.
Since its creation, the Academy has had 30 directors. There were also temporary or accidental directors such as Vicente García de Diego , accidental director (1965-1968), and Rafael Lapesa , interim director (1988).
